Rigidity.
Trouble with change, transitions, and anything that doesn’t go the expected way.
What it can look like
- Transitions
- Routines
- Rules
- Black and white
- Stuck
- Surprises
Rigidity looks like a child who falls apart when plans change, who insists on the same route, food or order of things, who argues rules to the letter, or who cannot move on from a disappointment. In adults it can be difficulty adjusting at work, a strong need for predictability, and trouble seeing another point of view. Rigid thinking is common in autism and anxiety and goes with some executive function weaknesses; an evaluation shows which is at play.
