← What we assess for

Phobias.

An intense fear of a specific thing or situation, out of proportion to the danger, that is hard to get past.

What it can look like

  • Dogs
  • Needles
  • Vomiting
  • The dark
  • Heights
  • Avoidance

A phobia is fear that is far bigger than the risk and leads to avoidance: a child who panics at a dog across the street, who can’t manage a doctor’s visit, who won’t sleep without the light on; or an adult who plans their life around not flying or not being near needles. Phobias are common in childhood and most pass. The ones that don’t can shape school attendance, friendships and family routines, and we assess them as part of a broader picture of anxiety.
